CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN CELEBRATES 300th ANNIVERSARY

August 2008 Boise, ID -- The Church of the Brethren is celebrating its 300th Anniversary this year. The Brethren movement was founded in August 1708 when eight members of a small Bible study group led by Alexander Mack Sr. were baptized in the Eder River, in the village of Schwarzenau, Germany.

From that small beginning, the Church of the Brethren has grown to become an international church, with about 1,000 congregations and close to 130,000 members in the United States and Puerto Rico, as well as sister churches and missions in Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, India, Brazil, and Haiti.

The Church of the Brethren is a Christian denomination committed to continuing the work of Jesus peacefully and simply, and to living out its faith in the community. It is based in the Anabaptist and Pietist faith traditions and is one of the three Historic Peace Churches.
